Embracing Change: One Way to Improve Business Few would argue that change makes us nervous. But while we may have this seemingly negative response to it, if properly embraced, change can have a very positive impact on our businesses. In business, as in life, there are two basic types of change: the kind you "make", over which you have control, and the kind that simply "happens", to which you need to find understanding and make adjustments. The good news is: if you plan well, even change that simply "happens" can provide great benefits. At a recent irrigation business conference held at the University of Notre Dame, "change and how to manage it" was a hot topic. As it was pointed out, some of the most significant changes over which we have no control are our changing demographics. The aging babyboomer population has resulted in the most widely traveled, sports- and leisure-oriented population in our history. How might this impact the irrigation industry and, more specifically, your business? Think of it simply in terms of housing: does this forecast more senior-living communities than single-family homes? If people are traveling, do they want expansive yards to care for? Now consider what steps you might take in your business to prepare for these changes. Perhaps you should start thinking about switching your emphasis to more commercial business. If your focus remains residential customers, this can be an excellent opportunity to emphasize the benefits of maintenance-free automatic irrigation systems and the importance of installing reliable products, such as Irritrol Systems valves and controllers, which have a long history of dependability. Another trend discussed is among the "Generation Y" group where severe school overcrowding is evident in key urban areas. What does this change mean for the housing market and the need for additional schools, playgrounds and parks? Again, how can this change benefit your business? Are you prepared to expand your residential business to include light commercial/municipal contracts? and visa versa? Finally, even social trends can have a dramatic impact on your business. Our society's attraction to technology has never been greater; in fact, statistics show that the majority of households with young children have a computer. In addition, the "Generation Y" group has strongly embraced many environmental concerns, such as preserving natural resources. Many of the latest irrigation products from Irritrol Systems are in step with these trends. For example, the advanced KwikDial© Series controller offers scheduling flexibility to meet increased water restrictions, while its optional KwikStart© Remote Control System appeals to the technologically minded by allowing remote operation of individual valves while away from the controller. The Wireless Rain Sensor Series offers a simple yet highly effective way to conserve water, appealing to customers on two important levels: technologically and environmentally. Change is inevitable. And, if you use it to your advantage, your business can make a dramatic change with the times... a change for the better.
